THE WEDNESDAY - Issue 4

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Issue 4 of THE WEDNESDAY.

Last week saw the Owls claim their first 3 points of the season taking them to a total of 5 from a possible 12. Whilst fit players are still in short supply, those on the pitch are starting to find their feet and play with a little more control and confidence.

With the first League Cup match and Leeds at home it will be an interesting week at Hillsborough.

This issue see a "Wednesdayite Information" section. If any other organisation would like to submit information for inclusion in THE WEDNESDAY please email editor@uptheowls.co.uk.

Please remember not to be shy and tell us what you think of the newsletter and how we can imporve it. Send you comments to editor@uptheowls.co.uk.

Best regards,

Match Preview - Wrexham (Home) - 23rd August 2006

The Owls start their League Cup campaign at home to Wrexham who on their last visit to Hillsborough lost 4-0.

The Dragons are currently unbeaten in League Two so will come to Hillsborough full of confidence. Wednesday will likely be down to 11 fit professionals for this game with Wade Small out injured and Brad Jones unavailable due to a clause in his loan agreement.

This is the first meeting between the teams in cup competitions.

Match Preview - Leeds (Home) - 27th August 2006

Wednesday go into Sunday's Yorkshire derby above Leeds in the table.

The Owls will be looking for a similar result to last seasons encounter when a Chris Eagles free kick was enough for Wednesday to win 1-0. The margain should have been greater with Lee Peacock, David Graham and Chris Brunt all going close.

There's likely to be goals in the game with the last goalless draw being back in April 1969, 26 games ago!

Its hoped that striker Deon Burton will be fit enough to join the squad with The Owls currently having no fit forwards.

Overall Leeds hold the advantage with 33 wins to Wednesdays 28.

Match Review - Plymouth (Away) - 19th August 2006

Match #4

Result: Plymouth 1 - 2 Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday deservedly got their first win of the season at Home Park after coming from a goal down to beat Plymouth.

Wednesday started the game with no fit strikers in the entire 16 and it was left to Wade Small and Chris Brunt to lead the Owls attack. Small missed a glorious chance to put Wednesday in front within 5 minutes but fired high and wide when clean through on goal. He was substituted shortly after through injury. Wednesday brought on Sean McAllister, who was the only Owls outfield player on the bench with any first team experience, to replace him.

Brunt nearly scored shortly after when charging down a keepers clearence before Plymouth took the lead with their first opportunity of the game on the stroke of half time. Paul Wooten scored from the spot after Jones was harshly adjudged to have fouled Hayles inside the box when the foul started fully 2 yards outside.

The Owls equalized immediately after the break when McAllister got his first senior goal after a lovely flighted ball to the far post from O'Brien. Brunt then hit the side netting and later the crossbar as Wednesday looked to claim all 3 points. Hills was next to come close also clipping the top of the bar with a helping hand from the keeper.

Burton O'Brein finally got the goal Wednesday deserved when taking a John Hills pass on his knee before calmly clipping the ball beyond the Plymouth keeper and into the corner.

Plymouth, despite creating nothing all game, then missed 3 glorious chances to level things during 8 minutes of injury time despite the referee only signalling 3 minutes.

Memory Lane - Anton "Ante" Mirocevic

Mirocevic was the Owls first 'foreign' signing in August 1980 for £250,000 from FC Buducnost, his home town club.

It was two months later before he could play for Wednesday due to various work permit issues and he did score on his debut. Unfortunately he never really settled at Wednesday and was a very inconsistent performer. He was probably best remembered for scoring in the 1982 FA Cup semi final at Highbury against Brighton.

After 3 years he requested a move back home for family reasons and he returned to the club that sold him to The Owls.

A year later he retired and spent 2 years gaining coaching certificates. He then took charge of his home town club for a short spell before moving into the backroom to coach and scout until 2002.

He's now president of the Juvenile Football Committee of Montenegro in Serbia.
