Match Review - Wrexham (Home) - 23rd August 2006

Wednesday crashed out of the Carling Cup in the First Round after League Two Wrexham ran riot at Hillsborough.

Wednesday had 13 players missing for the game and half of the 16 man squad were made up of academy players. Both sides started brightly and had chances before Wrexham took the lead on 33 minutes when Roberts scored from close range after a clear handball missed by referee Swarbrick.

Six minutes later it was two nil when Llewellyn beat Adamson after a mistake by Lee Bullen. The Owls rallied after half time but Wrexham killed the game off on the break when Done scored after a goalmouth scramble. Whelan pulled one back for Wednesday on 79 minutes before the Welsh side finished the game off on 84 minutes when the highly rated Jones scored from 20 yards after a neat move.

Its now 5 consecutive seasons since The Owls made it past the first two rounds in this competition.

Match Review - Leeds (Home) - 27th August 2006

Match #5

Result: Sheffield Wednesday 0 - 1 Leeds

The Owls are still looking for their first home win of the season after losing by a single goal to Yorkshire rivals Leeds.

Wednesday had the better of the first half with Deon Burton missing from six yards after Sam's cross had been deflected onto the post. Brunt and O'Brien also went close.

Leeds came out the stronger side after half time and were unlucky not to take the lead were it not for a brilliant last ditch tackle by Simek. On 70 minutes Leeds finally got the breakthrough when Healy scored from the spot after Jones brought down the Irish striker.

The Owls keeper was sent off. Wednesday pressed in the last 15 minutes and had 2 penalty claims turned down but Leeds held on.

Leeds - David Healy

Player Focus - Andy Blair

Andy Blair signed for Wednesday on the 7th August 1984 for £60000 from Wolves. He joined the Owls as they were preparing to embark on their first campaign back in the top flight after 14 years in the wilderness.

Blair enjoyed a good first season with Wednesday as The Owls took the top flight by storm with victories at Old Trafford and Anfield. He also wrote himself into the record books by becoming the first, and so far only, Owls player to score a hat trick of penalties. The feat was acheived in a League Cup 4th Round game against Luton Town at Hillsborough in November 1984 as Wednesday won 4-2.

His second season wasn't his best as he got injured in the opening game of the campaign. He returned after several weeks out to become a regular until a fateful FA Cup tie against Derby in February 1986 when he was substituted at half time after his error led to a goal.

Three weeks later he was transferred to Aston Villa after a fallout with manager Howard Wilkinson. His spell at Villa though was ruined by injury. At one point he spent 14 months on the sidelines and he subsequentlly had spells at Barnsley, Northampton and finally Kidderminster before retiring in 1990 due to injury. In the same year he opened a childrens playschool with his wife before owning his own sports shop in the Midlands.

He can now be found turning out for Aston Villa 'old boys' on rare occasions whilst still running his businesses.

If anyone has anything they would like to send in please let us know by email to editor@uptheowls.co.uk
