Match Preview - Southend (Away) - 9th September 2006

Wednesday travel to Roots Hall on saturday, their last league visit being 1980.

The Owls have yet to record a victory at the venue, losing 2, and drawing 2, of their 4 visits. Southend have started very strongly at home by winning both their home league games but have been less succesful away from home where they have lost 3 from 3. They currently lie one place, and one point, better off than Wednesday in 17th place.

Its likely that Wednesday will be strengthened by the return of Steve Adams, Wade Small and possibly Marus Tudgay to the squad.

Wednesday - Marus Tudgay

Match Preview - Stoke City (Home) - 12th September 2006

The Owls entertain Stoke next Tuesday evening still looking for their first home victory of the season.

Stoke are likely to be tough opponents having not lost at Hillsborough since December 1984 in league action. The Owls did however triumph 3-1 in September 1999 in the League Cup. Stoke won 2-0 last season in the corresponding fixture and claimed a goalless draw in the opening game of the 2002/3 season for their other league visit prior to 1984.

Brad Jones is likely to return in goal for this game unless his sending off against Leeds is recinded.

Wednesday - Brad Jones

Player Focus - Imre 'Ray' Varadi

Imre Varadi became an instant crowd favourite at Hillsborough after joining from Newcastle United for £170,000 plus David Mills in 1983.

Before joining Wednesday he'd already appeared for illustrious clubs such as Tottenham, Everton and Benfica.

Varadi's first season at Hillsborough was Howard Wilkinson's promotion campaign of 83/84. Amongst his goals in that first season were two in a 4-2 victory against his previous club Newcastle in November 1983.

He was the Owls top scorer in that promotion season and went on to score 21 goals the following season, the Owls first in the top flight, for 14 years.

But two years after signing he moved to West Bromwich Albion for £285,000, a move which angered Owls fans. His stay at the Hawthorns was short, before moving to Manchester City, where he'd stay for two more years.

In 1988 he rejoined Wednesday but shortly after signing manager Howard Wilkinson left to join Leeds and Varadi quickly fell out with caretaker manager Eustace.

Despite Ron Atkinson taking over in February 1989 Varadi failed to make a first team start and it was left to former manager Howard Wilkinson to take him 30 miles up the M1 to Elland Road. During his time at Leeds he won both the 2nd and 1st Divsion titles although he was less involved for the League Championship campagain.

Varadi left Elland Road in 1993 to join Rotherham United but again his stay was short before joing Mansfield Town just two years later.

He had spells at 8 more clubs before finally choosing Sheffield FC as his final destination, retireing in 1999. Varadi then spent a short time coaching in the States before more coaching duties at Stalybridge Celtic along with ex teamate Mel Sterland.

These days Varadi works as a football agent and can regulary been seen at Hillsborough on match days and reserve team fixtures. In total Imre Varadi appeared for 24 different clubs in his career.

If anyone has anything they would like to send in please let us know by email to editor@uptheowls.co.uk
