Match Preview - Hull (Away) - 15th September 2006

Wedneday make their second appearance in front of the tv camera's this season with a trip to bottom of the table Hull City on friday evening.

The Tigers have only managed 1 point from the opening 6 games and are already adrift of the remaining teams.

Last season The Owls lost by a single goal but most fans will remember the previous trip when a last minute winner by James Quinn sealed a play off place for Wednesday on the penultimate fixture of the season.

Overall we have an excellent record against Hull with only 7 defeats in 41 games in all competitions although the majority of Wednesday's wins have come at home.

Match Review - Stoke City (Home) - 12th September 2006

Match #7

Result: Sheffield Wednesday 1 - 1 Stoke City

Wednesday are still looking for their first home victory of the season after a 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

The Owls opened brightly with plenty of nice neat football and Burton was denied a goal within a minute of the kick off by a fantastic last ditch block in the six yard box.

Simonsen then produced a brilliant one handed save to deny Bougherra his first goal for the club before Stoke scored against the run of play, Paterson breaking the offside trap to calmy slot under Jones.

Within 5 minutes Wednesday were level when Brunt scored from the spot after handball.

Whelan then missed a great chance when through on goal but fired straight at the keeper.

After half time the game settled down and chances were at a premium. Tudgay fired wide when well placed 5 minutes from time but other than that both teams were restricted to long range efforts.

Match Review - Southend (Away) - 9th September 2006

Match #6

Result: Southend 0 - 0 Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls remain unbeaten away from home after a well deserved point at newly promoted Southend.

Kick off was delayed for 15 minutes but it was Wednesday who came out the better side when Simek fired wide from 6 yards after a mazy run when it looked easier to score.

Halfway through the first half Whelan crashed a 25 yarder against the bar and repeated the trick a few minutes later from a free kick.

Burton then fired wildly over when well placed before Eastwood managed Southend's first real effort on goal on the stroke of half time.

After the break the hosts came out stronger with Campbell-Ryce causing problems but Jones was only threatened on rare occasions mostly from long distance.

Wednesday tired near the end of the game and were restricted to a couple of long range Brunt efforts as the game remained goaless.

Player Focus - Martin Hodge

Martin Hodge arrived on loan from Everton for the beginning of the 83-84 promotion season.

He was originaly signed as cover for England U21 keeper Iain Hesford but Hodge was selected for the opening game and would not miss a match for 5 years (214 games) meaning Hesford never made a first team appearance for Wednesday!!

His transfer was made permanent almost immediately for £50,000. His form almost earned him an England call up for the 1986 World Cup as he was put on standby but the FA decided he was not required.

It was 1987 before he lost his place to Kevin Pressman through injury and such was Pressman's form that Hodge struggled to reagin his place and was sold to Leicester City in 1988 for 5 times what the club origianlly paid for him.

He went on to appear for Hartleppol, Rochdale and Plymouth before retiring in 1996.

He returned to Hillsborough in 1996 as goalkeeper coach and was promoted to first team coach in 2001 but only lasted 1 year before departing with manager Terry Yorath.

He spent a short time at Rochdale as goalkeeping coach before taking the same role at Leeds United. His current job.

If anyone has anything they would like to send in please let us know by email to editor@uptheowls.co.uk
